Scandal for the entire Counterstrike community ESWC Masters Athens without Counterstrike. The organisators of the Electronic Sports World Cup will open the new ESWC season 2009 at the Athens Digital Week from 17 to 18 October. For this event, the organizers cancel the Counterstrike tournament, however they made a Warcraft 3 and Quake 3 qualification.

For each discipline the overall prize money is 15,000$ and the winners will qualify directly for the ESWC Grand Final 2009. Through the early start of the new season and the cancelation of Counterstrike the ESWC organisators are suprising the whole eSport scene twice. The reason of the last-mentioned action of ESWC are the three Global Challenges in Los Angeles, Montreal and Dubai as well as the World e-Sports Masters in Hangzhou (China) in October. So probably the professional clans and players will participate in another tournament in this month.

The number of attendees of the remaining two games are 16 players consisting out of 12 international selected player and 4 greek participants. The qualification for this event is simple: while the international players have to apply for the attendance , the greek players will contest in a local qualifier to find out who will represent Greece at the ESWC.
